Lawyers guild's alleged ties to Antifa spark call for DOJ probe https://ift.tt/GFH5c0i

FIRST ON FOX: A Texas Republican called on the Department of Justice on Friday to investigate the National Lawyers Guild, saying the prominent legal group's activities go beyond defending rioters in court and may extend to supporting Antifa-affiliated violence. Rep. Lance Gooden wrote in a letter first obtained by Fox News Digital to the DOJ that the National Lawyers Guild has "close ties with left-wing extremists and domestic terrorist organizations like Antifa." "The true degree of their involvement in organizing attacks within our country is unclear, but I am deeply concerned that the NLG and its continued support for Antifa extremists pose a direct physical threat to the lives of civilians and law enforcement officers," Gooden wrote, also noting that he wanted the DOJ to probe the group’s financing. A DOJ spokesperson confirmed it received Gooden's letter but had no further comment. Fox News Digital has reached out to the National Lawyers Guild for ...

Senate Dems tank GOP plan to pay troops, fund Pentagon as shutdown hits Day 16 https://ift.tt/OIkprAK

Senate Republicans’ plan to reignite the government funding process was torpedoed by Senate Democrats, who blocked a bill that would pay the troops as the federal government entered Day 16 of the shutdown. The annual defense appropriations bill was blocked largely along party lines on Friday, with only a handful of Senate Democrats joining Republicans to advance the measure. While President Donald Trump made a temporary move to ensure that military service members were paid, that funding won't last forever.  The only Senate Democrats to cross the aisle were Sens. John Fetterman, D-Pa., Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H. Lawmakers are now headed home after a short week in Washington, D.C. "I think the people in our military deserve to get paid," Fetterman said. "That's what my vote is about."  Had the bill advanced through its first procedural hurdle, lawmakers could have modified it to include other funding bills, a move that Se...

Obama endorses Newsom California redistricting Prop 50 https://ift.tt/JOqnhct

Former President Barack Obama is urging Californians to vote in favor of Proposition 50, which would reshape congressional districts. Voting opened last week to add as many as five Democrat-held seats in Congress, which could possibly offset President Donald Trump’s moves in Texas and elsewhere to help Republicans in the 2026 election. "California, the whole nation is counting on you," Obama said in a video released on X Tuesday. "Democracy is on the ballot November 4th. Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election, and wield unchecked power for two more years."  "With Prop 50, you can stop Republicans in their tracks," he continued. "Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field, preserves independent redistricting over the long term and lets the people decide. Return your ballot today. Vote yes on 50."  NORTHERN CALIFORNIA VOTERS WEIGH IN ON PROP 50 REDISTRICTING FIGHT The ad was paid for by ...

Senate set for new vote to end shutdown, but gridlock over Obamacare subsidies remains https://ift.tt/M9vVD1g

The Senate is set to return on Tuesday to again vote on whether to reopen the government , but like many times before, the plan is expected to fail again as a deal remains elusive. Lawmakers in the upper chamber are expected to vote for an eighth time on the House GOP’s continuing resolution (CR), as the government shutdown inches closer to its third week. But after a long weekend away from Washington, D.C., it's unlikely either party has shifted from their positions. Senate Republicans want to pass the House’s "clean" short-term funding extension, which would reopen the government until Nov. 21. Included are millions in spending for lawmaker security and a budget fix for D.C.'s local government. Spanberger quiet on twin controversies in final stretch of Virginia race https://ift.tt/WAbwdou

With just weeks left before Virginians head to the voting booth, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger has been rattled by twin controversies — a violent text message scandal involving a fellow Democrat and fresh criticism over her stance on transgender bathroom policies. In 2022, Virginia state attorney general candidate Jay Jones told a colleague via text that he wished violence against former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his children. The private messages, which recently came to light, have sparked outrage from Republicans and discomfort among Democrats, forcing Spanberger to navigate one of the most volatile moments of her campaign. ‘ CONSUMED WITH HATE’: WINSOME SEARS, JASON MIYARES UNLOAD ON DEMOCRAT JAY JONES OVER VIOLENT TEXTS Spanberger's cautious tone carried into last Thursday’s debate, where she faced off against GOP nominee Winsome Earle-Sears.
