Democrats who called for ICE to be abolished under Trump largely silent as border crisis rages https://ift.tt/k9xXwqd

A handful of high-profile Democrats in the Senate and House previously supported the notion of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — the agency tasked with enforcing immigration law in communities and at the border. Despite their previous calls for ICE to be scrapped, there has been little resistance or pushback from Democrats about ICE enforcement under President Biden as the border crisis continues to wreak havoc on U.S. citizens, cities and communities. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts — two Democrats who sought their party's nomination for president in 2020 — are prominent leaders who previously led calls for ICE to be abolished outright, or broken up during former President Donald Trump's tenure in the White House. Trump risks losing key voter base with opposition to Arizona abortion law, pro-lifers say https://ift.tt/rWsIw2b

Former President Trump's opposition to a strict abortion ban in Arizona has put him at odds with pro-life and Christian activists, who represent a voter base key to his presidential election effort.  Last week, the Trump presidential campaign released a statement saying that states should decide how to regulate abortion. Days later, that position was tested when the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that an 1864 law banning abortion without exception for rape or incest should be enforced.  Trump, who claims to be the most pro-life president in U.S. history, said the court's decision "went too far" and urged lawmakers to "ACT IMMEDIATELY, to remedy what has happened." He said that "ideally" anti-abortion laws must contain exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother. In other comments, he expressed confidence that the Arizona law will be "straightened out."  That message was ill-received by Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood...

Supreme Court rejects appeal from Black Lives Matter leader held liable for violent attack on police officer https://ift.tt/bjf0sPU

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from a Black Lives Matter organizer who was held liable by a lower court for a random protester’s attack on a police officer at a protest he organized. In 2016, civil rights activist Deray Mckesson was sued by an unnamed Baton Rouge police officer — "John Doe" — for injuries he sustained during a protest. Doe claimed that an unidentified third party threw a "rock-like" object during the protest and hit him , knocking his teeth out and leaving him with a brain injury. The officer sued Mckesson on the theory that he "should have known" that the protest "would become violent as other similar riots had become violent."   "The pattern was set: out-of-state protesters representing BLM fly into a town, gather, block a highway, engage and entice police, loot, damage property, injure bystanders, injure police. By July 9, 2016, when McKesson organized the Baton Rouge protest/riot—he had no reason to e...

Whitmer remains silent on protesters' 'Death to America' chants while weighing in on war in Israel, election https://ift.tt/uCfpthY

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer remained silent on protesters recently chanting, "Death to America" at an anti-Israel protest in her home state, but did weigh in on whether President Biden’s handling of the war in the Middle East could cost him the battleground state in November.  "The state of Michigan is always going to be a close race, no matter what, under what scenario. I will share, though, as I've had conversations with people both in my Jewish community and in the Arab American and Muslim and Palestinian community, that a lot of people are hurting right now. A lot of people are one degree of separation from someone who's lost their lives, whether it was on October 7, or is in the war in Gaza," Whitmer told NBC’s "Meet the Press" host Kristen Welker on Sunday morning when asked whether Biden’s handling of the war in Israel could cost him Michigan’s vote in the general election.  "And so I'm trying to keep an open dialo...
