Haley celebrates momentum as GOP rivals ramp up attacks: 'These guys know we're surging' https://ift.tt/rWlphbS

Republican presidential candidate and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley responded Friday to a series of attacks from her political opponents, saying that her challengers in the race are losing and that they know that her campaign is "surging." Haley's comments came during an interview with Fox News Channel's Martha MacCallum on "The Story," where she also took aim at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over his comments about her record as governor of South Carolina and suggested that it's up to him whether to drop out of the race as she gains momentum in the polls. Asked about recent campaign attacks by former President Donald Trump , who has referred to Haley as "bird brain" and insisted she is a globalist concerned about the prosperity of other nations, Haley said, "Look, all these guys know that we're surging in the polls so they're all starting to hit." "The nickname, he's losing it, it's not even a funny nic...

Reagan historian looks back at historic O'Connor appointment: 'most qualified' https://ift.tt/kG8Qwav

Sandra Day O’Connor, an Arizona rancher's daughter who went on a distinguished trailblazing legal career, was "the most qualified woman" then-President Ronald Reagan "could possibly find" to appoint to the Supreme Court in 1981, according to a Reagan historian. An accomplished politician turned jurist, O’Connor had been the first female majority leader of the Arizona Senate. Following her legislative work, she turned to the judiciary, serving as a county court judge before being appointed to the Arizona Court of appeals.  During his 1980 presidential campaign, President Reagan made a promise to appoint a woman to the Supreme Court bench. In O'Connor, Reagan found something of a kindred spirit, according to one biographer. Craig Shirley, author of the forthcoming book The Search for Reagan , writes, "Like Reagan, Sandra Day (O’Connor later by marriage), came from a hardscrabble background." SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR, FORMER SUPREME COURT JUSTICE...

'Toughest uphill climb': Race forecaster reveals shift toward GOP in top 2024 Senate race https://ift.tt/sMi6Bxe

The Cook Political Report made a notable rating adjustment in the Montana Senate race , shifting favor to Republicans in the battleground race for the Democratic seat. The "independent, non-partisan" analyzer, which measures the competitiveness of races nationwide, shifted the Democrat-held Montana Senate seat Thursday from "Lean Democrat" to "Toss Up," a major move in the 2024 election as Democrats cling onto their slim chamber majority. Sen. Jon Tester, a Democrat, is running for a third term in Montana next fall but faces tough opposition from Republican Tim Sheehy, who is running a high-profile race to flip the blue seat to the Republican Party. Jessica Taylor of the Cook Political Report wrote that Tester faces "the toughest uphill climb of any incumbent Democrat." ICE to close Adelanto detention facility holding few illegal immigrants due to COVID-era court order: sources https://ift.tt/QFgkmGe

EXCLUSIVE : Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is expected to close down a detention facility in Adelanto, Calif., that can house nearly 2,000 illegal immigrant inmates but has been nearly empty for years due to a COVID-era court order, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell Fox News Digital -- just as the administration is calling for more detention beds for the agency. ICE was blocked by a September 2020 court order from sending more detainees to the privately-operated facility after a lawsuit demanding fewer detainees due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was then near its peak.  But that order is still in place, despite the COVID-19 emergency declaration having ended earlier this year and similar facilities -- including in the area -- having expanded capacity. While able to house nearly 2,000 detainees, only a handful of immigrants live there. ICE DETENTION CENTER HOUSES HANDFUL OF INMATES DESPITE HAVING THOUSANDS OF BEDS: LAWMAKER  Rep. Whitmer's sister drops from NY House race, endorses progressive Dem for high stakes GOP-controlled seat https://ift.tt/toGnmWE

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s sister, Liz Whitmer Gereghty, on Wednesday suspended her campaign for the House in New York’s 17th congressional district. In announcing her exit from the contest as Democrats vie to reclaim the seat won by GOP Rep. Mike Lawler in 2022, Gereghty endorsed former congressman Mondaire Jones. Jones is running a comeback campaign to flip back the once-reliably blue district now considered swing territory in 2024. The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC dedicated to electing Republicans to the House of Representatives, billed Jones as an "extreme progressive" who supports Medicare-for-all and the Green New Deal and has backed calls to defund police, along with the abolition of cash bail.  "When we started this journey, we had one goal: to ensure the Hudson Valley was no longer represented by an anti-choice, shape-shifting extremist out of step with our values," Gereghty said in a statement. "Mike Lawler and his ...
