"And I thought my work was good. I was feeling it. I felt authentically afraid." He added, "And we did it a bunch of times, and I was like, ‘Boy, t...

California Democratic Rep. Tony Cárdenas accepted thousands of dollars from a registered lobbyist to his  legal defense fund  long after the alleged victim dismissed a lawsuit against him, according to a government watchdog group. On Friday, the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) filed a complaint to the Office of Congressional Ethics calling for an investigation into whether the lobbyist cash violated House rules. "A legal defense fund is barred from accepting contributions from a registered lobbyist, but in this case, it appears that Rep. Cárdenas' legal defense fund did just that," Kendra Arnold, FACT's executive director, told Fox News Digital.  The cash in question went to a defense fund that Cárdenas established after facing accusations that he had sexually assaulted a minor in a 2018 lawsuit, which the alleged victim agreed to toss in September 2019. Cárdenas racked up around $150,000 in legal bills over the ordeal, and his legal defense fu...

The Justice Department said that it has unsealed criminal charges against over two dozen defendants, including several leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel – a Mexican drug cartel responsible for much of the fentanyl trafficking into the U.S. Separately, the Treasury announced that it has sanctioned five people in China and Guatemala over fentanyl production and the movement of precursors into Mexico. "You know, there’s a lot that goes into this — hotels and transportation and all that. But there’s the symbolism to consider too, and I think it would have been a strong statement to say, ‘Hey, Georgia has delivered for us, and we’re not taking that for granted.’" The party reportedly secured $20 million in financial commitments from donors and corporations for the DNC to be hosted in Atlanta, arguing that Georgia, which has become a key battleground state in recent years, played a critical role in securing Democratic power in Washington, D.C. The chair of the Georgia Democratic Party, Rep. Nikema Williams, said that she was disappointed that Atlanta had been overlooked, but she said her state would "remain the cen...

With Title 42's end a month away, Biden admin making moves to deal with surge https://ift.tt/ga9X2AY

The Title 42 public health order, which was implemented at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and has morphed into a central cog of the U.S. response to the ongoing migrant crisis at the southern border, will end in a month’s time -- with the federal government still making moves to deal with a potential surge. The order was implemented in March 2020 during the Trump administration and at the beginning of the pandemic. The order, from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), allows border authorities to rapidly expel migrants at the southern border for public health reasons. Whereas migrants who are encountered entering the U.S. illegally may normally be processed and expelled using Title 8 authorities that can take hours or days to complete, Title 42 meant that migrants could be turned back to Mexico often without even being put into detention. White House outlines push to crack down on fentanyl flow, amid tensions with Mexico https://ift.tt/ga9X2AY

The White House on Tuesday set out its strategy to counteract the enormous and deadly flow of fentanyl into the U.S., including greater cooperation with the private sector and a push to close loopholes -- even as tensions with Mexico have been heightened over the issue. "At a time when the global illicit fentanyl supply chain has changed how illicit substances are produced and trafficked, the Biden-Harris Administration is announcing a strengthened whole-of-government approach to save lives by disrupting the trafficking of illicit fentanyl and its precursors into American communities," the White House said in a statement. Fentanyl deaths have been in recent years, with over 70,000 deaths in 2021 attributed to overdoses from the drug -- which is 50-100 times more potent than morphine and can be fatal in tiny doses. The drug is primarily made in Mexico by drug cartels using precursors from China and then shipped across the U.S.-Mexico land border. On Tuesday the White Hou...
